running shoes, flickr, other stuff

June 10th, 2007 by Reena Linke

well folks,  i fear it’s been a while since my last post.  so here it is.

i’ve *finally* posted pics on my flickr.  mostly a bunch from my 2006 summer in cambridge, england, uk.  this included some side trips to glasgow to visit a mate of mine and a whim of a trip to killarney, ireland.  the other pics are from choir tour 2006 and just some other random ones.  more will go up as i find the time to resize and upload.

ehm, let’s see, i went to the mall of america today.  i don’t tend to get excited about the mall, except i do enjoy wandering around different stores.  anyway, i went on a mission to find some new running shoes.  i’m a die-hard aasics girl.  in high school i went to a running store that measures your feet and watches you walk and run.  they prescribed them.  i’ve never looked back.  so anyway, i checked out a couple stores, comparing prices as i went.  the best deal ended up being at dsw.  that store is crazy.  i have a hard time looking around in there.  sensory overload.

this weekend i also saw a lovely vision - eric cannedy as a member of the noble saxon corps.  he, along with shari speer and marylynn mennicke, performed in the operetta the student prince.  it was a very good show with lots of great numbers and singers.  quite hilarious at points, as well.  5 stars from me *****

since i never discussed my memorial weekend, i shall take the opportunity now.  post packing (please refer to previous blog), i drove to north dakota to my grandparents.   6-7 hours.  i enjoy the trip.  anyway, i spent some time taking in my grandparents garden.  this is quite a production really.  they found an old swing set this year made out of old pipes that must have been 40+ years old.  this will serve as a trellis of sorts for the peas and other vines.  my grandmother also has a kiddie pool full of lettuce heads that look straight from the package picture.  quite lovely really.  they also have a second garden for larger plants, plus a full collection of rhubarb.  gardening is no small deal for this house.

one afternoon i spent up at my other grandma’s lake cabin, which was quite fun, as all my male cousins were up there.  played a little hackey in my cousins oversized vans.  wrestled a bit.  climbed a tin roof.  scratched my leg on an old rusty pipe.  the usual.  but then i also went tubing on my uncles new tube, big bertha.  let me preface this by saying that it snowed two nights previously; my uncle is also a bit of a sass; and i’m a very experienced tuber.  i am used to “real” tubes, though.  ones made of rubber with some weight.  not these new-fangled plastic ones that are the size of my sister’s cavalier.  my only warning was my aunt, sharing the story of my cousin flying as in a small spaceship last summer.  great.  sure enough, i didn’t even make it around the first bay before one side caught some air, lifted, and skipped me across the water.  i’m pretty sure i did about 3-4 flips on the surface before my head went under.  let’s say i i had to spit upon my first breath, which came more as a shudder and was followed by hypothermic gasps.  after failing to get back in bertha and having to swim back to the boat to climb the ladder to jump in, i decided this was not going to happen again.  i developed a strategy of shifting weight and digging my knee to the outside.  praise the Lord it worked.

i’m tired of that story now.

that’s pretty much my weekend.  now i am counting down the days to lucad (a conference the alumni relations office is going to) and moving.  it’s coming soon…

’tis all for now.

buona notte.
