Chapter 2: The First Day of Classes

August 23rd, 2007 by Billy Schultz

Today marks the first day of senior year. Needless to say, it’s been pretty easy so far. I know things will change, especially in Philosophy, but overall it should be fairly painless.

It’s truly hard to believe that I began formal schooling way back in 1991, but awesome to see how God has blessed me throughout my years as a student, leading me to where I am today, a senior a Concordia University-St. Paul. I’m thankful to all the teachers I’ve had (even the ones I disliked), for they’ve each given me knowledge that has helped me navigate through this world. Someone once said “those who can’t, teach”, which I find to be ridiculous. The teachers I’ve had (for the most part) were some of the most knowledgeable and hard-working people I’ve had the privilege of interacting with. Here are a few of my favorites from K-12th grade:

Mr Krasno: 11th grade English. Krasno taught me all I ever needed to know about writing and made it always interesting, and his work in tying our readings in with what we were learning about in the English/ US History conglomerate.

Mr. Carey: Krasno’s counterpart junior year of high school. He made learning US History fun and provided us with unique ways of exploring our nation’s past.

Mr Schraft: My high school band director, known for his witty one-liners and illustrations, commonly referred to as “Schraftisms.” A fellow percussionist, he helped me appreciate percussion as more than making noise on a drum.

Ms. Witt: My main 6th grade teacher. She and I had the common bond of being Christians, and she showed Christ’s love to all her students.

Mr. Jacobson: my 10th and 11th grade Chem/ Phys teacher, whose wealth of scientific knowledge and his willingness to go against the grain inspired me to enjoy science.

That’s all for now. The plan is to name each post as a chapter of senior year, and I’ll document my experience along the way. Adios!
